Ramblings and Thoughts Related to Software and Website Development. I Moderate This Blog With An Iron Fist. There Will Be No Mercy!

Widget ForgeRecently the widgets archive for Kapsules underwent a complete redesign and rewrite. Affectionately called the 'Widget Forge' for some time, the archive was moved off of the kwidgets.com domain and into it's new home www.widgetforge.com. The new WidgetForge boasts a snappy new look and user experience. For Kapsules widget developers, the interface and process of adding and updating your widget has been improved and has some new features, including automatically alerting the developer to new comments and/or ratings for their widget and a better statistics display for the developer's widgets.

All in all the new archive is giant leap over the old and should help to spread the word about Kapsules and make finding and downloading more Kapsules widgets easier for every user.

PixelPirate is the man behind the new design and I encourage everyone to check out his work here on Wincustomize and on his personal website.

Wow, what a rip off of Konfabulator. The site design is a rip and even having a seperate widget site of 'widgetforge' is a rip of 'widgetgallery.'

I usually don't like to get involved in who rips off who, but this is too obvious.

I don't think that separating your widgets from your product webpage is a "rip". It's an idea that is currently in use by other companies such as Stardock: e.g. Wincustomize. It's an idea that makes sense in that the "skins" are created by more than just the developers of Kapsules, so why have all of these skins on the product's web site?

As far as a "rip" of the site, if it is similar, what's wrong with that? No graphics were stolen...simply an idea of a layout of the web site. I think you'll find that many company web sites are "similiar" because there are "best practices" out there when designing an end user experience, i.e. web site.

I think you're being a tad bit too critical Adam.

I for one love the web site and think it's a great idea. Some of those Kapsules are very original! It would be great if there were more DesktopX widgets from which to choose.

I, too, noticed the similarity in the webpage layout, but I think it is pretty benign.

Overall, the new website is very nice and will hopefully help publicize what I think is a far too often overlooked program. I really like it. Good job.

obviously, adam isn't aware of the history of kapsules. it's sad how the ignorant can ruin a thread. andrew, nice job on the development of kapsules. lasse, you did your normal quality of work on the site. congrats to both of you.

Agreed, well done andrew_ and PixelPirate. Great job on the content and design of the site.

'tis always wise to be certain of realities before asserting 'rip' hither and yon...

wow

looks cool.

the only thing I am mad at is how close it looks like widget gallery for konfab (the layout of the are that shows the widget)... but it still is cool work.

haha, very good!!

very nice, the only thing that annoys me is that it takes too much scripting and stuff to create a widget, wouldnt it be nice if you develop a UI where a grpahic artist can easily create common widgets such as weather, media player, system info etc widgets without going into the hassle of scary programming, I think it scares off a lot of good designers. just my suggestion coz this thing has kept me off widgets and gadgets
